OUR TUTORS

Alison Eldredge: Director

Before settling in New Zealand in 2010, Alison Eldredge's varied career has taken her to Canada, Europe, Mexico and the US. An Honors graduate of Violin Performance of the University of Brittish Columbia, she did postgraduate studies under Mauricio Fuks at McGill University and advanced chamber music studies with some of the world's leading artists at the Banff Center.

While maintaining a performance career on violin in orchestras such as I Musici de Montreal and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, she has always made it a priority to teach as well as continuing her professional development in education.

A registered Suzuki String Teacher, Ms. Eldredge pioneered Suzuki Music Education in Mexico, founding three programmes in three cities. For her work she was awarded a lifetime achievement award and an honorary lifetime membership by the Suzuki Association of Mexico. She has also trained in Steiner Music Education, and was the Music Director at the Upper Valley Waldorf School in Vermont. Shortly after moving to New Zealand in 2010, Ms. Eldredge founded Arohanui Strings, inspired by the work of Antonio Abreu in Venezuela.

Jane Young: Cello

Jane is principal cellist in Orchestra Wellington and teaches cello and double bass in Lower Hutt. She holds a Bachelor's degree in cello performance from the University of Auckland and took her Master's degree in cello at the University of Arizona.

Jane has taught and performed in the UK, USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand and is delighted to be teaching at Arohanui Strings and co-directing their orchestras.

Margaret Steen Guldborg: Cello

Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Margaret has lived, worked, and performed in Boston, Denmark, Malaysia, and Wellington.

She and her family have been living in Wellington for seven years. Margaret holds a Master in Music Performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston and is currently an active music teacher and freelance cellist.

Simon Eastwood: Double Bass

Sophia Acheson: Viola / Violin

Sophia, from Christchurch, NZ, studied performance viola in Wellington where she graduated with first class honours. She was then invited to study in Barcelona with Ashan Pillai, violist with Pinchas Zukerman Chamber Players, and was subsequently awarded scholarships to study with Donald McInnes at the University of Southern California and later with Roger Myers at the University of Texas at Austin. During this period she furthered an interest in early music, learning the viola d'amore and viola da gamba, performing solo in the US at Berkeley and Evanston, and since her return to NZ, in Auckland. Since 2012, Sophia has enjoyed working as a freelance musician with the Auckland Philharmonia, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Bach Musica and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, until her appointment in 2014 as principal violist of Orchestra Wellington. Apart from orchestral work, Sophia is also keen to continue her interest in playing early music and chamber music.

Megan Ward: Violin / Viola

Megan completed her Master of Music in viola at the New Zealand School of Music in 2014.

She plays viola in the popular Wellington jazz band, The Troubles, and a range of stringed instruments in the not-yet-popular Wellington Italian folk band Musica Ricercata.
